Wingfield Manor is another reputed haunt of Mary, Queen of Scots, and Sir Anthony Babington. Mary Stuart was held captive in the tower in 1569, 1584 and 1585. Legend states that Mary’s lover, Sir Anthony Babington, would smuggle himself into the grounds under the disguise of an old man. This ingenious feat was achieved by rubbing walnut oil onto his skin, staining the flesh to give a weathered look. On one such occasion, he was disturbed. In his hasty escape, a walnut fell out of his pocket and is said to have grown into what is now known as “The Babbington Tree” that can be seen within the grounds of the Manor. Some also claim you can see the two lovers walking in the grounds today.
